President Donald Trump used his address to the United Nations General Assembly to restate his opposition to new artificial-intelligence regulation while leaving open the possibility of government intervention under existing law.
Speaking September 22, Trump argued against creating new regulatory restrictions on AI and said the United States should remain a leader in developing increasingly capable systems.
At the same time, Trump said the Justice Department could act against AI companies if intervention became necessary, according to Reuters. That position draws a distinction between creating a new AI-specific regulatory structure and using powers the federal government already has.
The remarks came as AI safety moved higher on the agenda at the United Nations. Secretary-General António Guterres has called for stronger international safeguards, while governments remain divided over how aggressively advanced AI systems should be regulated.
The debate is increasingly focused not simply on whether AI should be regulated, but on which risks justify mandatory testing, external oversight or restrictions on the development and deployment of frontier systems.
